Wrinkles can mean more than just aging. In one quote that I saw, it says that wrinkles are signs of wisdom, endurance, and happiness. Yes, that is true but then again, we cannot deny the fact that it does make us feel awkward, conscious and sometimes embarrassed. This blog post will discuss causes of wrinkles and give you numerous do-it-yourself masks to choose from made with ingredients that are proven to be very effective but not as expensive as those in the market!
Causes of Wrinkles
Aging– As we grow older, degenerative processes take place. This is normal and inevitable. Your desmosomes (the structure that links your cells together) tend to be more fragile. Your lipids that lock up your skin’s moisture will eventually decrease. Muscles, if not exercised on a regular basis will sooner or later sag. Remember that gravity makes this progression faster.
Habits – Activities that put your muscles in the high active state can cause wrinkles as you age. This would include chewing gum, frowning, laughing, squinting eyes, and using straws when drinking.
Diet – If you are fond of consuming foods high in sugar you have to expect damages in the links of your collagen and elastin. This is due to the process of glycation (happens when molecules of sugar bind to the tissues.) It can cause make your facial skin appear flabby. Insufficient water, vitamins and minerals and even healthy fats can also speed up the formation of wrinkles. Superfoods can also help slow down the aging of the skin.
Lifestyle – Smoking cigarette and not wearing sunscreen are only some of the things that we do that add more stress to our skin.
Posture – Resting your face on hands or arms while sitting, a side-lying position with pillow squeezed in cheeks and jaw, and the likes deform the consistency of your integument, forming marks that will eventually become more obvious lines.
Before we start, let me just run by again that the sensitivity of our skin varies from one person to another. It is important that you orient yourself first with the substances that can trigger any allergic reactions. Try on a small amount initially in a span of few minutes before applying the entire mixture all over your face. If you feel severe itchiness or burning sensation, wash it off immediately. Also, it is highly advisable not to experiment a night before an important event (you do not want rashes or other manifestations of hypersensitivity on that big day!).
Affordable Home-Made Masks from your Kitchen
You may use these masks two to three times a week, depending on your need for a natural Botox. Cleanse your face well before applying the mask. Make sure to rinse with lukewarm water and dry the skin by patting (not rubbing) towel to your face.
Milk and Honey
- 4 tablespoons milk powder
- 4 teaspoons honey
- 4 teaspoons warm water
- Melt the honey with the warm water.
- Add the milk powder and mix to dissolve.
- Continue mixing until you form a pasty substance.
- Apply the mixture to your face. Avoid the areas of your eye to prevent irritations.
- Once your face is already fully covered, let the mixture sit for 15-20 minutes.
- Remove the mask by rinsing with lukewarm water.
The ingredient honey is not only antibacterial, it also boosts the complexion of your skin and it binds your cells together. The milk, on the other hand, makes the skin fair and smooth, no wonder why milk baths were so popular even centuries ago!
- Medium banana, ripe
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- Mash the banana using fork. Make it more refined by using spoon afterwards.
- Add the honey and lemon juice, mix thoroughly.
- Apply to your face avoiding the eyes. You may want to use two coats for this mask to allow deeper penetration.
- Let it stay on your face for 10-15 minutes before washing it off.
*Since bananas are naturally sticky, you may wash your face with a mild cleanser. Alternatively, you might want to wipe the mixture off with facial tissue or cotton first before cleaning with lukewarm water.
Banana is rich in potassium. This particular nutrient hydrates the skin. It is also full of vitamins A, B and E which delays aging and diminishes wrinkles. In addition to anti-bacterial properties of honey, the lemon juice lightens dark skin, and it evens out the color of your face.
Eggs and Oatmeal
- Egg white
- 2 tablespoons oatmeal
- Separate the white and the egg yolk.
- Whip the egg white and add the oatmeal.
- Mix the two ingredients to form a paste.
- Apply the mixture to completely cover your face.
- Wait for twenty minutes.
- Rinse well.
Eggs and oatmeal are full of protein that hydrates, moisturizes, tightens skin, and shrinks pores – the key requirements in achieving youthful skin! - 2 tablespoons Plain yogurt
- Apply the yogurt liberally onto your face.
- Leave on for 10-30 minutes.
- Wash it off.
Yogurt’s ingredient lactic acid, protein, calcium, vitamins, and probiotics can prevent premature aging, rejuvenate and make your skin smoother. Yogurt can also be combined with other ingredients from your pantry such as honey, strawberry, lemon, oatmeal and even turmeric. The effects will vary depending on the chosen elements.
There are indeed many other materials you can make use of and combine that can reduce fine lines that expose your age. You can either simplify (use only egg whites or plain banana for example) or experiment by combining others – even with those that are formulated and sold in market! However, the ones I have mentioned above are the simplest and most practical ingredients that can guarantee youthful glowing skin.
