3 Little Known Tips to Reduce Negative Thinking

Reduce Negative Thinking
Reduce Negative Thinking
Reduce Negative Thinking

When you hear the question, “Do you see the glass half full or half empty,” what do you say? Do you smile and say you are an optimist but secretly admit that you don’t see the bright side of things as often as others? Or, do you openly admit that you are a pessimist and have been told that you are too negative? Are you looking to reduce negative thinking? If being a pessimist has caused some conflict in your life or you simply wish for more positivity, then these three tips may help you get the shift you need.

Tips to Reduce Negative Thinking

1. Make Pessimism a Strength

Do you tend to see the obstacles way ahead of everyone else? Have you thought “I told you so” more times than you can count? If so, then you probably are a strategic thinker. If you are strong in strategic thinking then you will find yourself looking ahead and analyzing the “big picture” more than task-oriented thinkers. While some people are focused on today, this strength allows you to focus on tomorrow and beyond.

This thought process may be what drives your pessimism and negative thinking. Being able to look further down the road will naturally bring questions and concerns that others may have not considered. Instead of seeing your observations as pessimism, change your outlook to focus on the strength of helping the group avoid pitfalls long-term. Present your “negatives” as the value you bring to the group and this may help you reduce negative thinking.

2. Focus on Delivery

While you may find your observations a strength, be careful how you communicate. The delivery of your message will make or break you – period. Optimists want to focus on the positives, so they will hear your concerns as negativity unless presented in a specific way. I have learned from experience that these communication techniques work best for me:

  1. Only share the concern mostly closely related to the topic of the current conversation. If you share too much or discuss long-range concerns too soon, others will not absorb all of what you are saying. This will lead them to believe that you are just being negative.
  2. Be open-minded. You may believe you “know” the outcome, but if you are seen as unwilling to listen or unwavering in your decision, others will feel that you are just being difficult to work with. You may have to actively allow other ides to be presented in order to move forward.
  3. Utilize positive attitude and body language. If you seem defensive, sit closed off or look inattentive with your group, then any concerns that you present will generally be received as pessimistic.

If you pay close attention to how you deliver your concerns and at what point in the conversation you share them, you will find that others will react to you in a more positive way.

3. Go Along for the Ride

If there is one thing I have learned from being a pessimist is that you need to go along for the ride. Stay quiet more than you speak, listen more than you share and be open to ideas of the conversation. Deliver only what is relevant in the moment and understand that for many people, the path to resolution is like an onion. The layers will be peeled back; it just takes time to get there. Think of each step as moving in the right direction.

While being a pessimist has the stigma of being a negative personality trait, it is actually a strength that many groups need in order to be successful. If you present your ideas in an open and planned manner, others will be less inclined to see you as having a negative influence and more as a strong mentor of the long-term vision. Once the perception of negativity shifts, more positivity and the ability to build self-confidence is sure to come into your life.

Anti-Bullying Message - You are not Alone
Anti-Bullying Message - You are not Alone
Anti-Bullying Message – You are not Alone

Sadly, bullying, harassment and discrimination are topics that some of our kids and loved-ones face on a daily basis.  A very concerning topic for me is the increase of students committing suicide over bullying each year. As another school year gets kicked off, many are feeling nervous to go back and potentially face another year of abuse. The bus rides, the gym locker room and social media can all be areas of worry. These times came make a child or teen very isolated and alone. I created this anti-bullying message to allow us, as friends and family, the ability to show support and love during these difficult times.

This message contains three important messages:

    1. You Hear Them: Some victims of abuse may feel that no one understands what they are going through. They feel that if they try harder to fit in, the problem will go away. This message demonstrates that you understand the issues they are facing and believe it is not their fault.

  1. You are There for Them: Being bullied and harassed can be a very isolating event. The trauma can make it feel as if no one cares about them or would miss them if they are gone. This message tells them that we will always be a person of support and guidance. We find that being different makes them courageous and we love that they are in our lives.
  2. You Will never Abandon Them: When being bullied, many other kids or friends will abandon or ignore the victim to prevent becoming a victim themselves. This message shows that we have the courage to stand up for them and be by their side through whatever challenges may come.

This video is only 2 minutes long. It is not meant to solve the issue, but simply open the door for deeper conversation. It can be a quick way to let someone you care about know you are thinking of them. Sending this message to a friend or family member who is feeling alone can be the difference between making it through the day, or making an irreversible decision.

I hope we can use anti-bullying message as a tool. Please share it with your friends and loved-one to help others. I have included the embed code for the video if you’d like to share this on your website, or feel free to share the post below.

I would also love to hear your feedback on this topic. What other ideas can you share to help those who face bullying and harassment? Ideas for future messages are welcome as well.

Thanks for reading and support this effort,

-Tracy

Super Easy Salt Dough Gift Tag Ornaments Tutorial

Salt Dough Gift Tag Ornaments
Salt Dough Gift Tag Ornaments
Salt Dough Gift Tag Ornaments

Salt dough gift tag ornaments are a great way to start a meaningful tradition. With this tutorial you can learn how to create your own tags and add your own special touch. They are so easy to make and attaching them to gifts is a very  thoughtful way to show how much you really care!

Here we go!

Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water

Other Tools:
Board and rolling-pin
Mini cutters
Rubber stamp(s)
Colored ink
Pencil (to create hole)
Cookie sheet to dry
Sandpaper
Ribbon

Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl and slowly add in the water. Mix the ingredients until it forms a doughy consistency. Knead the dough with your hands until the dough is smooth. Dust the cutting board and rolling-pin with flour and roll out the dough until it is about a quarter of an inch thick.

Ink your rubber stamp with ink and lightly stamp the dough while it is rolled flat. Take your mini cutter and cut the shapes out of the dough. Use the stamp designs to create interesting patterns on the gift tags.

Place the cut-outs on a cookie sheet to dry. Take a pencil or other utensil to punch a hole for the ribbon. The cut-out gift tags can either be air-dried or you can bake them in an oven on 200 degrees F for 2 – 3 hours. Once the tags are dry, take a light grit sandpaper to smooth any rough edges.

The finishing touch is a ribbon tied through the hole to hang the ornament for viewing!

That’s it! This is a super easy craft project that adds such a nice touch of thoughtfulness to any gift. I have gotten such positive feedback from my customers when I gave these out with each order. I love adding that personal touch!

P.S. The wonderful inspiration of this salt dough gift tag ornaments project was a blog post I found on Pinterest. DIY Wedding Favors: Salt Dough Tags gives a nice walk through if you’d like more details.

Fabulous Fall Pumpkin Mod Podge Idea

Fall Pumpkin Mod Podge Idea
Fall Pumpkin Mod Podge Idea
Fall Pumpkin Mod Podge Idea

I don’t know about you, but seeing autumn leaves at the peak of their vibrant colors on a bright sunny day is just one of those situations that really make me stop and sense the passing of time. The beauty of today will quickly fade and the chill of winter will soon be upon us. I always wish to hold on to the moment a bit longer.

This is a perfect project to display the colors of the season in a festive way. It is so easy to do and impossible to mess up. This is also a nice kid-friendly project as all the materials are easy to clean up and natural. My nine-year old daughter helped me put this collection together and we had a great time doing it.

Let’s get started!

What you need for this Fall Pumpkin Mod Podge Idea:

  • Colorful fall leaves, pressed (explanation to follow)
  • Pumpkins, we used both orange and white but you can use whatever types you’d like.
  • Mod Podge (You can choose shiny or matte, we used shiny)
  • 1 inch paint brush
  • Newspaper to cover the work space
  • Toothpicks to secure the leaves
  • Scissors to trim stems

Part 1: Fall leaf collection:

When the colors are at their peak, go outside and collect a variety of colors and types of leaves, making sure the leaves are fresh enough that they are not curling on the edges. Also, make sure you to collect enough leaves! Some things to consider:

  • The number of pumpkins you plan to cover.
  • The size of the pumpkins.
  • Whether you are covering the front only or the entire pumpkin.

We just covered the front, and our pumpkins are 8 – 10 inches in size. We used about 10 leaves per pumpkin. We did use more than we expected!

Once the leaves are collected, place the leaves on newsprint and press them with a heavy object to flatten them out. We pressed ours for a week, but next time I think I will not wait so long as the leaves were stiffer than I’d like and forming them to the pumpkins was more challenging than expected. I believe if they were a bit fresher, it would have been easier. (If you try it sooner, let me know your results!)

Part 2: Mod Podge Time!

Lay the newspaper on the surface you will be working, as it may get a bit messy with the amount of Mod Podge needed. Next, just spread Mod Podge on both the surface of the pumpkin and the back of the leaves. The glue will look white and cloudy, but it will dry clear. The glue takes a while to dry, so do not be afraid to move the leaves around to get the perfect collage. If a leaf does not want to stay in place, simply tack a toothpick into the edges of the leaf to secure. Be sure to mix the colors and style of leaves. Change direction and create a colorful fall leaf display!

Next, let the leaves dry, checking on them periodically to make sure they did not slide down or curl up on the edges. Add tooth picks to secure curling areas. Adding additional coats may be helpful for the stubborn areas. Just make sure to remove your toothpicks before the glue becomes too dry or the glue will pull up on removal. Next, trim any stems that are sticking out or too long.

Once it is dry, it is finished! Simply arrange the pumpkins inside or outside for a festive and colorful display. What a great way to preserve the colors of the season!

Breathtaking Meme Quote About Commitment

Meme Quote About Commitment
Meme Quote About Commitment
Meme Quote About Commitment

Today’s Meme Quote About Commitment

“You always have two choices: your commitment versus your fear.” – Sammy Davis Jr.

Do you have a goal? Are you working hard, but it feels unreachable or unobtainable at times? If it does, use this inspirational meme to give you the courage to move forward. Go on, take the next step! If you need support, reach out to your friends and family to help you stay positive and focused on staying committed to your goal. Don’t let fear stop you.

If you are struggling to stay committed, then surprisingly, you may not be as fully committed as you need to be. I found a very interesting article regarding being fully committed to a goal and why some people seem to commit much easier. Have you ever heard of the 100% rule? It simply means that working 99% on something is hard – 100% is easy.

Author Susie Moore writes about the 100% rule in her article, “The 100 per cent rule: The simple advice that changed my life.” She identifies three components of the rule.

  1. Identify what specifically needs 100% of your attention – Not all parts of your life needs 100% commitment, but if you look deep within you, your heart knows what does – That little voice will tell you!
  2. Put in the effort – Doing something 99% is exhausting. Why? Because it weighs on your mind. It allows you to waver and skip out “once in a while.” This leads to a never-ending cycle of non-commitment. 100% means no wavering, no excuses!
  3. Repeat (Repeatedly) – “True happiness is the joy we experience when we move toward our potential.” The guilt is gone, which leaves more room to commit to your goal.

Give the 100% rule a chance and see if your commitment grows and your guilt and fear declines. I would love to hear your stories of committing to a goal or overcoming fear below!

7 Benefits of Soy Wax Candles

Benefits of Soy Wax

Soy wax candles are a pure, safe way to provide a fragrant home. We have listed the top seven benefits of soy wax to help you decide if soy wax is right for you.

  1. More Natural: Soy wax candles are simply made from soy wax, which is the processed form of soybean oil. While some pillar soy wax candles may have additives included to assist with increasing the burning point, many soy candles are purely wax, leaving you with a clean and natural candle.
  2. Clean Burning: Because soy candles usually do not have other additives mixed in, they burn much cleaner than other types of candles. Less soot and smoke will be released into your home, greatly reducing the toxic carcinogens that may be present with other types of candles.
  3. Lower Burn Point: Many soy candles will be in containers or melted in candle warmers due to a lower burning point. This will allow the candle to burn longer and slower providing a longer lasting scent.
  4. Quality: Because many soy candles are made in the United States, you will not receive candles that contain lead based wicks, which are toxic to breathe when lit. Also, because soy wax has a lower melting point, some soy candles will not even require a wick and can be heated with a candle warmer.
  5. Safety: Soy candles can have a safety component to them if you use flame-less candles, candle warmers or heating lamps to warm the wax. This will greatly reduce the chance of a fire hazard or a burn from a wicked candle.
  6. Clean Scent Throw: Due to the pure form of soy wax, the fragrance is not contaminated with additives that other types of candles may contain. This leaves a cleaner, more fragrant form of the scent.
  7. Cost Effective: Soy candles can be melted over and over, generally lasting twice as long as a paraffin wax candle. This greatly reduces the cost of candles over time.

Hopefully these seven benefits of soy wax will help you decide if melting soy wax melts or candles is the best choice for you. To see our full line of Jamie Clair Soy Wax Melts, please visit our store today.

10 Unstoppable Ways to Develop Self-Confidence

Develop Self-Confidence

Is it true that we get more comfortable in our skin as we get older? Hopefully we do, but many of us look to be more comfortable in our skin right now. While it may feel like everyone else on the planet has more self-confidence than you, many people look to build higher self-esteem, including me. I have worked hard to overcome shyness and I would like to share the list of 10 steps I have taken to develop self-confidence.

  1. Practice and Master a Skill: What do you love to do? Determine whether your interest is photography, basketball, video games … whatever! Figure out what makes you tick and practice it enough to feel very confident in your abilities. Have you ever read about the practice routines professional athletes put themselves through each day to reach and stay at the top of their game? They work very hard. Those stories are a testament to focusing and a mastering a skill. Being a master at something will certainly boost your self-esteem.
  2. Use Power Poses: Do you ever get nervous before a speech, interview or asking someone out? If so, take a few moments to practice these Power Poses beforehand. (And please note, you will feel silly the first few times you try it, but they do work.) Find a secluded spot (bathroom, empty room, etc.) and make your body as large as you can. Stand with your legs shoulder-width apart and either raise your arms above your head and reach for the sky or boldly place your hands on your hips like Wonder Woman. Now hold this position for a few minutes and breathe. Your body chemistry will change and make you feel more powerful. Amy Cuddy, a Harvard Business School social psychologist, speaks that maintaining power poses such as these for a few minutes can cause neuroendocrine and behavioral changes for both males and females. Give it a try!
  3. Smile When You Walk: I had to train myself to do this because I must have a serious look on my face quite frequently when I am walking and concentrating. Even when I was perfectly happy, people would ask me what was wrong, or tell me to smile more. Those statements would aggravate me and make me self-conscious, so I chose to make a change. I am not necessarily advocating that you walk around with a huge grin on your face as it may make people think you are a bit strange, but I noticed that if I made a conscious effort to make a small smile or relax my expression, those comments completely disappeared! That helped me feel less awkward. Trust me, it feels less strange after you have done it a few times and it eventually becomes a habit. 🙂
  4. Make Eye Contact: Now step 3 and step 4 have to go together. If you walk around with a smile on your face, but look at the floor when people walk by, they may get confused and think you are hearing voices. If you LOOK at them with a smile on your face, a very strange thing happens … they usually say Hi! And, even if they don’t, it still leaves an impression of your self-confidence. You may even start saying Hi! yourself!
  5. Master Small Talk: If you are trying to develop self-confidence, mastering small talk is a must. Luckily, it is really not that hard if you just remember that people love to talk about themselves! Ask them something about themselves such as what their job is, about their family / pets, or what do they like to do for fun. Unless they are shy as well, it should get the conversation started. Be prepared to have answers to these questions as well, so that you can participate in the conversation.
  6. Actively Listen: Most people do not “listen” to conversation to actually listen or hear what the other person is saying. Most people listen so they can formulate an answer. That means most are spending less time focused on what the other person is saying and more about what they want to say back. Try to make a conscious effort to truly listen to what the person is saying. This will make it easier for you to speak to them again in the future as you will probably remember something from the conversation…people LOVE that!
  7. Make Healthy Choices: If you are not eating right, not getting enough exercise, enough sleep or are otherwise not making healthy choices, you will not feel confident in your appearance or your health. This will impact your overall confidence level. If you make some time to focus on yourself and make good changes for your body and spirit, your self-confidence will soar!
  8. Define Your Look: Once you feel better about your life choices, putting your look together will be a natural next step. Whether you feel good in casual looks or business attire, try to find clothes and hairstyles that allow you to stand proud. Conversely, if you are worried about your appearance it will shrink your posture and reduce your self-confidence.  I notice this recently when attending a funeral. While the first outfit I chose looked nice on me, it made me wonder if I may draw unwanted attention to myself with its bold pattern. I chose a classic black dress instead and felt more confident the entire day.
  9. Refuse Negative Self-Talk: Do you have a reel of non-stop inner dialogue going about how you don’t look good, or you are not smart enough or whatever? You need to stop. Period. I heard a quote by Dr. Phil once and he said something to the effect of, “People don’t think about you as much as you think they think about you.” That statement has helped me when my inner demons start in. Nobody cares (for very long) what shoes you wear or if your manicure is perfect. Do not let these small details keep you from moving forward. If you are hearing active criticisms frequently from others around you, please see step 10.
  10. Develop a Positive Support Network: We all need support. It may be from family, friends, co-workers or even your social network, but try to find others who can encourage you when you are not feeling confident and cheer you on to grow personally. If you are surrounded by people who criticize you, cut you down or hold you back from being your true self, then your self-esteem will certainly suffer. Please look to remove those relationships from your life so that you can grow in positive ways. If you need help, please seek the assistance of a trusted adult or counselor.

There you go, 10 steps to a better, more confident you! I guarantee that if you put even half of these tips together you will be unstoppable! Go ahead and give these a try. I am sure you will begin to develop self-confidence. I would love to hear your success stories or your own suggestions in the comments below.

Inspirational Meme About Being Different

Inspirational Meme: Always Be Different - janet & clarence
Inspirational Meme About Being Different - janet & clarence
Inspirational Meme – Always Be Different

This inspirational meme about being different is an image I created to show that we should try to embrace the traits that make us unique. If we try too hard to fit in, there is less that makes us memorable. If we focus on those aspects of life that make us healthy, happy and “special,” it will help us be irreplaceable!

“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.” – Coco Chanel

Do you need help in determining your unique traits? I found and article written by Olakunbi Korostensky,” Discovering And Embracing Your Uniqueness.” She suggested these three questions if you are still in doubt about what is special about you:

  1. Am I aware of how people react to me when I am with them?
  2. When in a crowd, am I more interested in voicing my opinion or do I listen intently to others?
  3. When decisions are made, do I simply go along with the opinions of the majority, or is upholding my values more important to me?
